Diabetes and Your Eyes

If you have diabetes, it is important to have a dilated eye exam at least once a year.  Diabetes affects the blood vessels throughout your body.  Believe it or not, more than any other structure or organ, the eye has the highest oxygen demand from these blood vessels.

Diabetes can cause permanent vision damage if not detected and treated early.  It is one of the leading causes of vision loss in the United States.  Recent studies show that more than half of patients with diabetes are not receiving routine eye exams.

At Eye Physicians and Surgeons, we offer comprehensive screening and treatment for diabetic eye disease.  If diabetes begins to show up in the eye, this often requires advanced intervention with laser treatment and injections of medicine to help prevent and reduce damage and vision loss.

We offer sub-threshold micropulse laser treatments for diabetic retinal swelling. This new type of laser surgery is thought to be less destructive and better tolerated than older procedures and produce better outcomes.
